Comerford’s Irish Boxer Winery is a testament to our ancestors. We stand on the shoulders of immense sacrifice and our winery reflects the Comerford tradition. Our family farm is in Ellicottville, New York which is well known for its heavy snowfalls and cold temperature. So, we needed to select a resilient grape that would endure harsh winters. We selected Itasca which is the newest cold-hardy release out of the University of Minnesota Breeding program.
Itasca produces a dry white wine that is light yellow to straw in color and has aromas of pear, melon, and subtle honey notes. To enhance the experience, we blended in both Riesling and Niagara creating a smooth taste. Niagara is a native grape which evokes floral jasmine.
My partner in this project is Hope Concannon. Like our wine, we blended two resilient families together. We hope our five kids take over the vineyard one day and continue to honor our past. - Founder John Comerford
John and Hope Comerford bought 30 acres of land in Ellicottville NY in 2012 and have since added 800+ grapevines, 40+ raspberry bushes, 20+ fruit trees, 40+ blueberry bushes, a pond, a dock, 30+ birdhouses, and plenty of other miscellaneous projects.
In 2014, John, his 5 kids, and a group of neighborhood kids began the process of planting grape vines. Year after year the Comerford's fought through the trials and tribulations of the unforgiving weather and wildlife in Ellicottville.
John and his family spent the next 6 years working to create the optimal environment for the vines to flourish. John became excited about every failure because he knew he was just one step closer to a successful harvest.
After 6 years of nonstop effort, the vines proved to be resilient and the first successful harvest was commenced.
"To dream big, and not allow anyone to tell you otherwise"
Ryan shared these values of great ambition with our founder, John Comerford. He helped plant the first grape vines on the property in 2014.
